Hip-hop’s Golden Era, that untouchable period in rap history when conditions manifested in such a way to propel forth an unprecedented flurry of groundbreaking artists into the global conscience, with a collective output that still continues to affect, shape and influence modern music today.

One leading pair of groundbreakers formed in the heart of the burgeoning New York scene, were the Mount Vernon duo of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. The perfect balance of exquisite beat maker and natural MC, the pair blew white hot for an incredibly short period of time before disbanding over artistic differences to follow their own solo paths. Releasing three critically acclaimed releases, 91’s All Souled Out EP, Mecca & The Soul Brother in 1992 (heralded as one of the greatest hip-hop LPs of all time) and follow up The Main Ingredient in 1994, the New York group in just a short life span, sealed their position in the hip-hop hall of fame.

From that point each party followed different trajectories, CL retreating somewhat from hip-hop, popping up every few years to lend his honey smooth vocals to various artist’s tracks (plus two solo LP releases). It was Pete Rock that continued to ingrain himself deeper and deeper within the fabric of hip-hop, lending his distinctive and groundbreaking production styles to a lengthy roll call of high profile artists, with the likes of Kanye West, Nas, Notorious BIG, Public Enemy all calling on the true master of the sample, digging for the rarest jazz, soul and funk cuts to deliver that signature Pete Rock sound. Like any great producer PR was not limited by the confines of any one genre either, racking up production credits for Madonna, TLC, Lady Gaga and Robert Glasper all included in his ever growing list of producer credits.

After a few attempts at reconciliation over the years the duo finally made up their differences recently and have decided, to the absolute joy of hip-hop fans everywhere, that the Soul Brother #1 and the Mecca Don were finally reunited and taking a slice of Golden Era sunshine on the road.

A real piece of hip-hop history this one and not likely to come back around any time soon, we suggest moving quickly as you could be waiting another 25 years...
